In my workshop, this is one of the most common concerns I hear. A customer walks in convinced their Rolex is broken because it’s suddenly running five or ten minutes fast every week. Sometimes the solution is surprisingly simple. Other times, it’s the watch’s way of telling us it’s overdue for professional attention.

Good news first: some drift is completely normal. Bad news second: sometimes it really is telling you something. Let’s break down what’s actually going on inside that movement, and how to know which camp you’re in.

How Accurate Is a Rolex Actually Supposed to Be?

Every modern Rolex movement is a certified chronometer, tested and regulated to meet Rolex’s own “Superlative Chronometer” standard. That standard allows a deviation of -2 to +2 seconds per day, which is actually tighter than the official COSC chronometer requirement most other brands use.

So a small variation isn’t a defect. It’s baked into how mechanical watches work. A tiny bit of drift, especially within that -2/+2 window, means your watch is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Where it becomes a real concern is when you’re seeing more than 5-10 seconds a day of gain or loss. That’s usually a sign something specific is affecting the movement, not just normal mechanical variation.

Why Your Rolex Might Be Running Fast

Magnetism is the number one culprit I see at the bench, by a wide margin. Modern life is full of magnets, phone cases, laptop speakers, purse clasps, tablet covers, even some kitchen appliances. When a watch’s hairspring gets magnetized, the coils can stick together intermittently, which almost always makes a watch run fast, sometimes dramatically so.

A recent impact or shock can also affect your Rolex’s accuracy, even if there’s no visible damage. Rolex movements have a slipping clutch mechanism that prevents true overwinding. But a mainspring that’s wound too tight combined with certain wrist positions can occasionally cause a temporary rate change.

Recent service or a fresh mainspring can sometimes run a touch fast for the first few days as everything settles in. This usually self-corrects.

Temperature swings matter more than people expect. Extreme heat can thin out the lubricants slightly, changing how freely the gear train moves.

Why Your Rolex Might Be Running Slow

Dirty or degraded lubrication is the most common reason for a slow-running watch. Oil that’s thickened with age creates more friction, and more friction means the movement loses energy and falls behind.

Low power reserve matters too. If you’re not wearing the watch enough hours a day and it’s not fully wound, it can run slow simply because it’s not getting enough energy through the gear train.

Worn parts, particularly the mainspring or escapement components, reduce the efficiency of the whole system over time, causing a gradual accuracy drop that gets worse rather than better.

Here’s something most people never think about: a mechanical watch runs at slightly different rates depending on its physical orientation. Dial up, dial down, crown up, crown left, gravity pulls on the balance wheel and components differently in each position.

This is why a watch might gain during the day on your wrist and then behave differently overnight sitting flat on a nightstand. It’s not malfunctioning, it’s just physics acting on tiny moving parts.

A well-regulated watch minimizes this effect, but it never fully disappears. If your watch seems to have “good days and bad days,” positional variation is often the quiet explanation.

Quick Checks You Can Do Yourself

Before assuming the worst, a few things are worth ruling out at home.

  • Test for magnetism by placing a small compass near the watch. If the needle spins or reacts, there’s your answer.
  • Check your daily habits. Do you set your phone on top of the watch? Keep it near a laptop or tablet speaker overnight? Store it in a bag with a magnetic clasp?
  • Track the drift for a few days. Compare it to an atomic clock source, like your phone’s default clock, at the same time each day rather than randomly checking throughout.
  • Note the pattern. Consistent daily drift in one direction suggests a mechanical or magnetism issue. Random, inconsistent drift often points to positional variation or wear pattern.

If Magnetism Is the Cause, the Fix Is Often Simple

If magnetism is the cause, and it usually is, the fix doesn’t require opening the case at all. A watchmaker runs the watch through a demagnetizer, a device that uses an alternating magnetic field to realign the hairspring’s coils back to neutral. It takes seconds, and the accuracy often snaps right back to normal immediately.

This is genuinely one of the most satisfying fixes in watchmaking because the before-and-after is instant. A watch running 40+ seconds fast a day can come out demagnetized and be back within a couple seconds almost immediately.

When It’s Time for an Actual Service

If demagnetizing doesn’t fix it, or if there’s no magnetism involved at all, the issue is likely mechanical. Thickened lubrication, worn parts, or a movement that’s simply overdue for attention are the next most likely explanations.

At that point, a full service is the right move rather than trying to chase the symptom. Regulating a watch with dried-out oil is a temporary patch at best. It’ll drift again within weeks because the underlying friction problem hasn’t gone anywhere.

  • Drift of more than 10-15 seconds a day, consistently
  • A sudden change in accuracy with no clear cause
  • The watch stopping and restarting on its own
  • Accuracy that keeps getting worse week over week
  • It’s been over 5-7 years since the last service
